Life skills development

About this support

Every skill you build for yourself is yours for good. Life skills support is about capability, not just help: learning to cook the meals you love, manage your money, catch the bus across town or speak up for yourself, with someone patient and encouraging beside you at every step.

We break skills down into steps that feel achievable, practise them in real life rather than in theory, and celebrate progress properly. The pace is always yours. Some skills come quickly, others take seasons. Both are absolutely fine with us.

What this support can include

Every arrangement is personalised to you. These are some of the ways this support commonly helps.

  • Cooking skills: planning meals, shopping for ingredients and preparing food safely
  • Budgeting, banking basics and building confidence with money
  • Travel training: learning routes and using public transport independently
  • Communication and social skills for everyday situations
  • Building and keeping household routines: cleaning, laundry and organisation
  • Using technology with confidence: phones, apps and staying safe online
  • Personal safety awareness at home and in the community
  • Decision-making, problem-solving and speaking up for yourself

This support might suit you if…

  • You want to do more for yourself and are ready to learn, at your own pace
  • You are preparing for a big step: moving out, starting study or starting work
  • Your goals include independence skills and you want structured, encouraging support
  • You learn best by doing, with someone patient who never makes you feel rushed

Not sure whether this fits your plan or your funding? Our plain-English NDIS guide explains how supports work, or you can simply ask us.

The nurse-led difference

Skill-building works best when it is safe. Our nursing team helps shape learning plans around each person’s health needs (safe food handling for someone with swallowing difficulties, energy management for someone who fatigues quickly), so progress never comes at the cost of wellbeing.

FAQs

Common questions about life skills development

How is this different from having things done for me?

The goal is the opposite: instead of doing a task for you, we help you learn to do it yourself, step by step. Many people combine both: practical help for some tasks, skill-building for the ones they want to own. Your plan and your goals decide the mix.
