Supported independent living (SIL)

About this support

Home should be the place where you feel most yourself. Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides help with everyday tasks in your home, whether you live on your own or share with others, so you can live as independently as possible, with support shaped around your life rather than the other way round.

We start by listening: what does a good day look like for you? What do you want to do for yourself, and where would support genuinely help? From there we build a consistent, familiar team around you, with routines that are yours, goals that are yours, and a home that feels like yours, because it is.

Every arrangement is personalised to you. These are some of the ways this support commonly helps.

  • Support with personal care, meals and household tasks at home
  • Overnight support: active overnight or sleepover shifts, as your plan provides
  • Medication support and help managing health routines
  • Building everyday skills: cooking, cleaning, planning and looking after your home
  • Support to get to appointments and stay connected with family, friends and community
  • A consistent roster of workers who know you, your routines and your preferences
  • Support with household decision-making and living well alongside housemates

This support might suit you if…

  • You want to live more independently, with the right support around you at home
  • You need support across the day, and possibly overnight, to live safely and well
  • You are preparing to move out of the family home and want that step done thoughtfully
  • Your current living arrangement is not working and you are exploring what else is possible

Not sure whether this fits your plan or your funding? Our plain-English NDIS guide explains how supports work, or you can simply ask us.

The nurse-led difference

Health needs do not keep office hours. In our SIL arrangements, Registered Nurses oversee medication systems, health monitoring and clinical escalation, and train the household team for each person’s specific needs, so support at home is not just kind and consistent, it is clinically safe.

FAQs

Common questions about supported independent living (SIL)

Is SIL the same as a place to live?

No, this is a common mix-up. SIL funds the support you receive in your home, not the home itself. Housing is separate, whether that is a private rental, your family home or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funded in your plan. We are happy to talk you through how the pieces fit together.

How does SIL funding work?

SIL is considered for people who need significant help throughout the day, usually in a shared living arrangement. Supports are set out in a roster of care that describes the help you need across the week, and the NDIA makes the funding decision. Your support coordinator can guide the process, and we can work alongside them.

Do I get a say in who supports me and who I live with?

Yes. Choice and control are the point, not a slogan. We involve you in decisions about your support team, and where shared living is involved, compatibility between housemates matters to us. It can make all the difference to how home feels.
